We saw-cut, break out and haul away old concrete, then deal with what is under it. In Sioux Falls that is often wet clay or settled fill, which is why the old slab failed. Lines are marked through South Dakota 811 before we dig.
Before a new slab goes in, the old one has to come out cleanly. We saw-cut the edge where old concrete meets concrete that is staying, such as the garage floor, the public sidewalk or a neighbor's drive, so the break is a straight line and nothing next to it is cracked. Then the slab is broken up, loaded and hauled away.
What is under the old slab tells us a lot. In Sioux Falls we often find black topsoil, wet clay or a hollow where fill settled away beside the basement. That is usually why the old concrete failed. Soft material is dug out and replaced with compacted granular base before anything new is poured. Nobody can see this until the slab is lifted, so our written quote says how extra base is handled if it is needed.
Before any digging, underground lines are marked through South Dakota 811. State law requires notice at least 48 hours ahead, not counting weekends and legal holidays. Private lines, such as a sprinkler system, a gas line to a grill or a wire to a shed, are not marked by the utilities, so tell us about those. Tear-out and haul-away are part of our quote when a replacement is needed.
Concrete removal in Sioux Falls: common questions
Where does the old concrete go?
It is hauled off the property. Clean broken concrete is commonly taken to be crushed and reused as base material. Haul-away is included in our replacement quotes, so you are not left with a pile.
Will removal damage my garage floor or the city sidewalk?
A saw cut along the joint keeps the break from running into concrete that stays. Heavy equipment is kept off the public walk and the neighbor's drive where possible, and we note the condition of both before starting.
Can you take out only part of a driveway?
Yes. We cut along existing joints and remove the bad panels. New concrete next to old will not match in color, and the old panels will keep aging, so we tell you when partial replacement makes sense and when it does not.
