Stamped concrete gives the look of stone or brick in one slab that frost cannot pull apart. Winter decides how it is sealed and cared for here. We show patterns and colors and explain the upkeep before we quote.
Stamped concrete is one solid slab pressed with a pattern and colored to look like stone, slate or brick. In Sioux Falls it has a real advantage over loose pavers: there are no individual units for frost to lift, so the surface stays even. It also has a real cost. A stamped surface depends on its sealer, and winter here is hard on sealers.
We build it the same way as any exterior slab in this climate first: compacted base, air-entrained concrete, joints in the right places. Then color and pattern go on. Color mixed through the concrete lasts longest. The release powder and the sealer add depth to the look. Because a sealed, textured surface can be slick with frost or meltwater, we add a grip additive to the sealer on walks, steps and pool decks.
Plan on upkeep. The sealer usually needs renewing every two to three years, and sooner where a snow shovel or a blade scrapes it. Use a plastic shovel, keep deicer off it and rinse road salt away in spring. If that sounds like more care than you want, a broom finish with a colored border or exposed aggregate gives some character with less maintenance. We show samples before you decide.
Stamped & decorative concrete in Sioux Falls: common questions
Does stamped concrete hold up to South Dakota winters?
Yes, if the slab under the pattern is built for frost and the sealer is kept up. The failures we see are sealer that has worn through, deicer damage and metal shovel scrapes. The pattern itself does not make the slab weaker.
Is stamped concrete slippery when it snows?
It can be. Sealer fills the texture and makes the surface slick when wet or frosty. A grip additive in the sealer fixes most of that. Tell us where people walk in winter and we plan the texture for it.
Can you stamp over my existing patio?
A stamped overlay can go over a sound slab, but it is only as good as what is under it. If the old patio has heaved, sunk or scaled, the overlay will crack or come loose in a few winters. We look at the slab first.
